The term alternative process refers to any non-traditional or non-commercial photographic printing process (i.e. historical processes that are no longer widely practiced). This 4-week workshop will introduce you to the basic principles and techniques of working with alternative processes, including the revolutionary use of digital negatives to bypass the need for a large-format camera and film. Experience the timeline of photography by making prints using three different historical processes — cyanotype, van dyke brown, and salted paper— and digital negatives printed from your own digital files. You will learn the history of each and get to know artists from both the past and present who work(ed) with these processes. Information regarding how to choose an image, and the file size required to print a negative, will be discussed in the first class.

Workshops do not have a minimum enrollment requirement. We will refund 80% of the fee if you cancel 3 weeks prior to the first day of the workshop. We will refund 50% of the fee if you cancel 1 week prior to the first day of enrollment. No refunds will be issued with less than 1 week notice of cancellation.
